CHINA'S GBA EDUCATION TOUR · PROGRAM PLAN V2.4

Reading China's Greater Bay Area
Like an Open Book

Live a day like a local · Read the city like an archaeologist · Compare it with Istanbul eyes
⏱ 10 days / 9 nights🌏 Hong Kong · Shenzhen · Dongguan · Guangzhou · Foshan 🧒 International learners aged 8–16🗣 Mandarin · Cantonese · English guides

01Why this tour is different

China is already — and will remain — a leading nation in nearly every field, with one of the world's largest markets. Tomorrow's global citizens need first-hand China literacy, not headlines. Most study tours visit famous sights and take photos. Ours is built on three threads that run through every single day, so experiences connect instead of scattering.

🥢

Live like a local

Food, clothing, housing, transport, payment and work — hands-on. Order at a cha chaan teng, survive a cash-free day on mobile pay, bargain at an electronics mega-market, take a driverless taxi, ride the rush hour. One life skill a day; a "final living exam" on the last night.

🏛

Read the city like an archaeologist

Every city gets a "strata card" — surface layer (today), middle layer (last 40 years), deep layer (centuries). Students collect evidence and stamps at each stop; all five cards earn the "GBA Archaeologist" certificate. Led by our archaeology-trained curriculum designer.

🕌

Compare with home

Both our civilizations grew up on trade routes: Grand Bazaar ↔ Huaqiangbei, Bosphorus ferry ↔ Star Ferry, Turkish tea ↔ morning tea, Karagöz shadow theatre ↔ Cantonese opera, Ottoman courtyard ↔ Lingnan garden. Every evening ends with "today's comparison", and students present findings back at their home school.

The comparison thread is designed for our first cohort from Türkiye. For other nationalities, the same framework applies — simply swap the comparison material. That is what makes this program replicable across markets.

02Day by day (10 days)

Building on the original framework's inquiry questions and sites, each day now adds: local-life experiences, hands-on tasks, a culture-clash moment and a strata card. ★ marks what's new in this version.

Day 1Hong Kong · Cultural DiversityHK Palace Museum → HKU → Central heritage walk → evening tram
🔍 Core inquiry: How does Hong Kong embrace cultural diversity?
Breakfast
★ Cha chaan teng first lesson: order milk tea and a pineapple bun in Cantonese or English; watch how strangers share tables and waiters take orders — your first look at Hong Kong speed.
AM
HK Palace Museum: a treasure hunt for three artefacts that witnessed "China meets the world" along the Maritime Silk Road — and the reasons why.
PM
The University of Hong Kong: coffee chats with current students (English/Mandarin welcome) plus a campus hunt for three pieces of "East-meets-West" evidence. Then a Central heritage walk: Man Mo Temple → Pottinger Street → PMQ. ★ Task "one street, two worlds": photograph colonial architecture and neon signage in the same frame.
Evening
★ "Ding-ding" tram observation diary: who rides it, what do they read, what are they thinking? Write down three surprises from today.
Culture clash: stand right, walk left; queue politely; tap in, tap out — Octopus vs Istanbulkart, the city in your pocket either way.
Strata card · Hong Kong — deep: fishing villages & temples before 1841 / middle: entrepôt port & colonial architecture / surface: global financial centre
Day 2Hong Kong · The Efficient MetropolisCity Gallery → HKMA → Star Ferry + MTR → Victoria Peak
🔍 Core inquiry: How does an international metropolis function efficiently?
Morning
★ Rush-hour mission: at 8:15 in Central MTR station, count the crowd, watch the commuters, and draw a "city pulse" curve — later compare with Istanbul's Metrobüs at rush hour.
AM
City Gallery: urban planning and land reclamation. HKMA, 55F: ★ "If I had a million" money class plus a three-currency exchange experience (HKD / RMB / MOP) — understanding the linked exchange rate and "one country, three currencies".
PM
Star Ferry + MTR inter-modal challenge: each team plans its own route back from Tsim Sha Tsui (time-limited!). ★ Ferry comparison card: Bosphorus vs Victoria Harbour — fare, commuters, history.
Evening
Victoria Peak panorama sketching: from the top, find this morning's MTR station, the HKMA and the ferry piers — see the city's skeleton.
Culture clash: speed is Hong Kong's personality. Evening debate: does efficiency give you freedom, or take it away? (No right answer — that's the point.)
Day 3Shenzhen · Speed & HeritagePing An tower → Nantou Ancient Town → Splendid China → Qianhai Ferris wheel
🔍 Core inquiry: How does a fast-growing city preserve diverse heritage?
AM
Ping An Finance Centre observation deck: ★ comparison task — with a 1980 fishing-village map in hand, find where "it used to be" behind today's glass.
Noon
★ Archaeology core stop · Nantou Ancient Town: 1,700 years as a prefecture seat → urban village → creative quarter, three eras physically stacked on one street. Find one brick/wall/doorplate from each era. Lunch in a "handshake-building" café.
PM
Splendid China folk villages: ★ ethnic-card game — draw a card, find that group's village, learn one greeting, film a 10-second hello.
Evening
Qianhai Bay Glory Ferris wheel: watch the "city of the future" light up, and debate the day's question at height: when new and old compete, who gives way?
Culture clash: "a floor every three days" Shenzhen vs Istanbul's old city where not one stone may move — students debate: development or preservation?
Strata card · Shenzhen — deep: Nantou prefecture seat / middle: the first SEZ factories / surface: CBD, Qianhai and robot cafés
Day 4Shenzhen · Technology Answers Real NeedsDJI → BYD → Bambu Lab 3D printing → Talent Park robot café + drone show
🔍 Core inquiry: How do innovators use technology and creativity to respond to real-life needs?
AM
DJI Experience Centre: ★ drone-rescue team challenge — plan flight paths and fly a simulated post-typhoon supply mission. BYD: read an EV through a transparent model; ★ 5-year cost quiz, electric vs petrol.
PM
Bambu Lab store: ★ everyone designs a "GBA badge", printed in 3D and mailed to your school after the trip — a second surprise when you're home.
Evening
Talent Park: ★ order from a robot barista — scan, pay, watch the arm pull the shot — then the drone light show. ★ All-day cash-free survival: mobile payment only; tonight, count how many taps you made.
Culture clash: a day without cash vs Turkey's cash-and-card habits — does a disappearing wallet feel like freedom, or losing control?
Day 5Shenzhen · Innovation EcosystemTencent HQ → Huaqiangbei → Shekou waterfront
🔍 Core inquiry: What powers Shenzhen's innovation ecosystem and global connections?
AM
Tencent HQ: the digital ecosystem hall plus ★ "how one idea grew to a billion users" story session — bring your questions, asked live.
PM
★ Huaqiangbei "business in one square metre": each team gets a ¥50 seed budget, buys one electronic component, and tells its global supply-chain story. Trip highlight: Turkish students teach İstanbul-style bazaar bargaining, Shenzhen vendors teach Huaqiangbei style — two haggling civilisations, one counter. Then the Huaqiangbei Museum electronics DIY: solder a simple circuit keepsake.
Dusk
Shekou: waterfront stroll past the "Time is money, efficiency is life" slogan; ★ micro-interview: ask a Shenzhen worker "Why did you come here?" — share the answer tonight.
Evening
★ Shenzhen share-out night: each team, five minutes, "My Shenzhen code".
Culture clash: Grand Bazaar ↔ Huaqiangbei: two thousand-year-old market traditions — what's sold, how people talk, and how a deal actually gets done.
Strata card · Huaqiangbei — deep: Shangbu industrial district / middle: component markets / surface: global hardware silicon valley
Day 6Dongguan · Modern History & Classical GardensHumen Opium War Museum → Keyuan Garden → Dongguan Memory streets
🔍 Core inquiry: How do people preserve and remember important history?
AM
Humen: a live history class beside the opium-destruction pools. ★ "If 1839's trade had a group chat" role-play — merchants, officials and sailors all talking past each other, and understanding how trade changed two civilisations. Look up: the Humen Bridge crosses the same water, 180 years later.
PM
Keyuan Garden, one of Guangdong's four great Lingnan gardens: ★ find the "mountains within inches" design tricks, compared with the Ottoman courtyard. Dongguan Memory old streets: a market stroll and ★ afternoon tea — roast goose rice noodles.
Culture clash: in the 19th century, the Ottoman and Qing empires were both renegotiating their place in Western-dominated trade — two ancient civilisations "being opened" is the deepest conversation of this trip.
Day 7Dongguan · World Factory to Toy CapitalShipai toy town → factory full chain → DIY painting → lakeside café evening
🔍 Core inquiry: What made Dongguan the world's toy factory — and China's "capital of designer toys"?
AM
Designer-toy exhibition centre: the full journey of an IP — sketch → 3D modelling → tooling → painting → packaging. ★ "one toy's journey" trace card: pick any toy and reconstruct every pair of hands it passed through.
PM
★ Paint your own vinyl toy blank (take it home); outstanding designs can get a real small-batch prototype run from our partner factory — "something I designed was actually made" is an achievement most tours can't offer.
Evening
★ Dongguan after dark: a lakeside café stop for reflection writing — the city that makes a quarter of the world’s designer toys also has one of China’s densest café scenes.
Day 8Guangzhou · The Millennia-Old GatewayMorning tea → Thirteen Hongs → Shamian Island → Canton Tower + Pearl River cruise
🔍 Core inquiry: Why did Guangzhou become a historic maritime trade gateway?
Morning
★ Morning tea exam "one pot, two dim sum": identify har gow, siu mai and phoenix claws; learn the finger-tap "thank you"; pour tea like a local. Compare: Turkish tea chats all afternoon, Cantonese dim sum chats all morning.
AM
★ Thirteen Hongs "1780 trade deal" role-play: each team receives an export order and plays hong merchant vs British East India Company factor — negotiating a tea-and-porcelain deal through a simplified historical script, laughing all the way to understanding "one port, one trade".
PM
Shamian Island architecture walk: ★ pick your favourite of 26 European buildings, invent and record "its story".
Evening
Canton Tower + Pearl River night cruise: 1900s qilou arcades on one bank, the CBD on the other — one river, two centuries.
Culture clash: camels on the Silk Road through Istanbul, sails on the Maritime Silk Road through Guangzhou — students discover their home is on "the other half" of the same story.
Strata card · Guangzhou — deep: Nanyue kingdom & the thousand-year-old road / middle: the Thirteen Hongs monopoly / surface: the CBD & Canton Fair
Day 9Guangzhou · Lingnan Architecture & Street LifeMorning tea → Chen Clan Academy → Yongqing Fang + Cantonese Opera Museum → Shangxiajiu supper
🔍 Core inquiry: How does Lingnan architecture adapt to climate and community life?
AM
Chen Clan Academy: ★ roof-beast hunt — find and sketch five auspicious animals in the ceramic sculptures; understand the clan academy as "ancestral crowd-funding", compared with Ottoman vakıf foundations.
PM
Yongqing Fang (Bruce Lee's ancestral home): ★ qilou temperature experiment — measure the difference inside and outside the arcade and verify the climate wisdom for yourself; compare its renewal with Nantou's. Cantonese Opera Art Museum: ★ watch an excerpt, try on costume, learn one water-sleeve move.
Evening
★ Shangxiajiu souvenir mission: buy a local specialty from a time-honoured shop using Mandarin and gestures only. Supper at a dessert house — mango pomelo sago or double-skin milk, and a chat about "the philosophy of sweet soup".
Culture clash: Cantonese opera's lingering arias vs Karagöz shadow theatre's wisecracks — two "old entertainments", the same job: holding a crowd.
Day 10Foshan · Kung Fu & Lion DanceAncestral Temple (Wong Fei-hung & Ip Man halls) → kung fu class → lion dance workshop → closing ceremony & farewell
🔍 Core inquiry: How do martial arts and lion dance carry local values and shape cultural spirit?
AM
Foshan Ancestral Temple: the finest "three carvings, two sculptures" of Lingnan; southern lion and martial arts performances at the Wong Fei-hung Memorial Hall. ★ Opening rite: learn the fist-and-palm salute — "one fist, one palm, peace under heaven".
PM
★ 90-minute Wing Chun basics with the wooden dummy. ★ Lion dance workshop: learn the three-step stance, then paint a mini lion head to take home.
Evening
★ Round table: why does kung fu talk about virtue, not victory? Compare with Turkish oil wrestling at Kırkpınar — two body cultures passing on values?
Closing
★ Closing ceremony: all five strata cards stamped → the "GBA Archaeologist" certificate. ★ Final team presentations: "If my friend had only one day, where would I take them?"
Farewell
★ Farewell dinner — the final living exam: students order and split the bill entirely on their own, on mobile payment. Ten days of life skills, graduated.
Culture clash: "learn the fist, first learn manners" — students discover the soul of kung fu isn't in the punches, it's in the rules.
Strata card · Foshan — deep: bronze casting & Cantonese opera / middle: grandmasters & industry / surface: heritage revival & design industries

Optional add-on day: Chimelong Safari Park OR Hong Kong Disneyland (either/or, priced separately). The 10 days run from arrival to departure; an extra day or two can be quoted on request.
